The research activities are founded on welding processes such as laser, electric arc with low and high intensity (Capacity Discharge Welding), and using the heat generated by friction (Friction Stir Welding). Combining simultaneously  these welding sources a wide range of new materials, with low weldability and difficult to weld with traditional welding techniques, could be welded in homogeneous and heterogeneous joints. Among the most recent computing algorithms, artificial and swarm intelligences have demonstrated their capability of solving scheduling, programming, and maintenance problems in manufacturing complex systems.<br /> The team of Laboratory of “Intelligent Computation for Manufacturing and Manufacturing Systems” have matured a considerable experience in resolving optimization problems for advanced technologies like welding and additive fabrication ones, and modelling the overall manufacturing system. The same approach can be potentially applied to a variety of processes that involve low resources availability and necessity of a high degree of efficiency, like processes in the health care systems.<br /> The team can design a screening experiment and explore the process to be simulated by enquire its actors. The information is structured as an input to the process and several solutions are found by means of commercial software and customer programming. The laboratory is equipped with 3 different welding techniques which are High Power Ytterbium Laser (HPYL), Friction Stri Welding FSR), and Arc Welding (AW). Those technologies are combined for hybrid welding by coupling two techniques at any time. Single plus coupled techniques  account for 6 different options for solving welding problems.<br /> The team of HWL furnish on demand study and consulting on enhancing productivity, lower cost, speed up throughput. The solution can reduce distortion, post-weld rework, and enhance weld quality. Stronger, lighter, better end-products and new product can be designed using the power for fusion and solid-state welding and fabrication technique.
