Research Activities

The lab is committed to the Research and development of an ultralight drift chamber as the main tracking device of an experiment at future leptonic colliders, designed to provide efficient tracking, high precision momentum measurement and excellent particle identification. The activity is supported by the future collider program at INFN, CERN and IHEP, along the path defined by the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Drift chambers prototypes are gas detector designed to cope with high transparency, in terms of radiation lengths, obtained by using a novel approach adopted for the wiring and assembly procedures. Particle identification capabilities are reached by using a cluster counting technique, expected to provide a two-times better particle separation with respect to the traditional method based on energy loss per unit length.
The lab is equipped with instrumentation for powering gas detectors, with gas supply unit and monitoring station, with a soldering station and a wiring machine, with a laser alignment setup and with computers for mechanical design and data analysis.

Research Activities

The Laboratory Fab Lab POLIBA is conformed with an interdisciplinary scientific structure for allowing the transversal collaboration of more "scientific knowledge" aimed especially at the experimental development of prototypes in the sectors of architecture, engineering and design. The principal objectives of the laboratory are three: 1. host groups of research for the realization and experimentation of prototypes; 2. juxtapose to the world of the SMEs to contribute the increase of competitiveness on the markets; 3. Specialised training on the digital sector implemented on manufactoring and visualization.

Research Activities

PolySense is a joint-research lab in collaboration between the Technical University of Bari and Thorlabs GMBH.
The activities of the joint research lab will be focus on the research and development of innovative optical gas sensing systems.
The detection and measurement of trace gas concentrations is of importance in a variety of applications, including environmental monitoring of greenhouse gases, disease diagnosis, industrial process control analysis, and detection of toxic and flammable gases. The PolySense Lab has extensive experience with the quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) technique, which uses a quartz tuning fork (QTF) as a detector for photo-acoustic signals. Using QEPAS, extremely small concentrations of potentially harmful gases (a few tens of parts per trillion) can be measured.
Leveraging this background, the PolySense Lab will focus its activity on the further development and implementation of novel gas sensing techniques and the realization of highly sensitive QEPAS trace-gas sensors.
Starting from the QEPAS technique and employing Thorlabs' engineering resources and manufacturing expertise, the PolySense lab will endeavor to design and produce QTF designs, optimized for different operation conditions. These QTFs will be incorporated into jointly-designed acoustic detection modules to produce sensor prototypes for highly sensitive real-time measurements. The end goal is to provide portable solutions for in situ and real-time gas detection, leading to advancements in breath analysis, environmental monitoring, leaks detection, hydrocarbon gas sensing, and monitoring of toxic gases and explosive precursors. PolySense Lab will also perform sensing on demand and provide third-party consulting.
To support the newly formed strategic partnership, Thorlabs will provide the necessary instrumentation as well as technical staff and funding for both the research and personnel, while the university will provide the laboratory and office space as well as conduct the research.

Research Activities

R&D, production and testing of ultra-thin silicon detector for particle physics. The laboratory is equipped with a clean-room (class 10000), a Mitutoyo Crysta APEX 9166 coordinate measuring machine, including an optical system ("optical head") to measure three spatial coordinates, aluminium wedge bonder machines, probe stations with micrometric pass, system for automatic assembly of detector modules, laser machine for micro-bonding.

The provision of on-demand virtual machines or clusters, or personal storage is carried out through the cloud infrastructure. The HPC cluster is particularly suitable for performing parallel jobs or requiring the use of graphics accelerators and / or low latency networks. The laboratory is able to provide data storage services both on disk and on magnetic tape.
