DARCOD

LabZERO is a multidisciplinary laboratory to enable strategic cooperation with enterprises and promote multidisciplinary research for the development of innovative technologies in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources in both urban and industrial sectors. Research and experimentation activities in LabZERO make use of simulation tools and technologically advanced equipment, in order to reduce the risks of applied research and support product innovation in the path “from concept to market”. The laboratory provides innovative solutions for fast prototyping, for the certification of materials and the development of complex systems, in the fields of energy efficiency, energy conservation, sustainable manufacturing, smart grids and smart cities.

LabZERO activities are based on the coordinated work of four research units: three units at the Politecnico di Bari (DEI, DMMM, DICAR), and one at the ENEA Research Center in Brindisi. The Lab is part of the Apulian network for the applied research fostered by “Regione Puglia” and aims to the integration with other R&D networks and industrial clusters. A main strength of the LabZERO is the collaboration with entities of different nature. In fact, LabZERO works in close cooperation with about forty stakeholders such as industrial developers, public territorial bodies, public administrations and Municipalities, and relevant research actors.

Il laboratorio si inserisce nell’ambito delle attività a supporto della ricerca e della didattica per il Design legato ai processi di sviluppo creativo e di processo in ambito digitale. Si configura come un luogo di ricerca che offre la possibilità di sperimentare i nuovi processi di design e fabbricazione digitale in associazione a specifiche metodiche di sviluppo progettuale.

La dotazione di strumentazioni, software, attrezzi e materiali è finalizzata allo sviluppo di ricerche che investono gli ambiti dell’innovazione di prodotto e di processo per i diversi settori di applicazione del design industriale.

What is INMATEX
INMATEX - INteraction MAterial EXperience Lab, is a research laboratory that deals with materials as tools for reactivating the perceptive-sensory characteristics of surfaces.
INMATEX classifies the materials through scales of sensory gradients evaluating their perceptive-sensorial characteristics based on interaction processes between surfaces. The laboratory aims to define taxonomies of relationships between materials and to shift the attention in the choice of materials from a merely technical classification to a conceptual one. The Lab uses the technical-scientific skills of the science of materials in comparison with the fields of aesthetics, critique and history of the visual arts.
WHEN AND WHY
Inmatex was born from the meeting between the research about the design of surfaces, lead since 2011 at the Polytechnic of Bari - dICAR by Rossana Carullo and Rosa Pagliarulo, with the MAIND project in 2013. On this occasion the categorization methodology through sensory gradients was developed, aimed at guiding the processes of functionalization of materials of the partners of the project, such as several Apulian based companies, depending on their perceptive-sensorial implications.
WHO WE ARE
The research group is composed of members with interdisciplinary skills who conduct research on the specific themes of the multi-sensoriality nature of materials applied to the design of surfaces.
The laboratory, that also contains the Material Library with the exhibition of the sensory scales and the prototypes developed, is located in room 40, third floor of the dICAR.
TARGETS FOR THE FUTURE
The goal of INMATEX is to raise awareness through the open source sharing of knowledge of the results acquired until now, and continuing the updating of the interactive database of sensorial scales and prototypes. INMATEX wants to be a point of reference for research, teaching and innovation on the design of surfaces for both students and enterprises starting from the territory of reference.

Research Activities

1) It is equipped with technical and scientific expertise, gained over a period of ten years, having worked in the field of history of the ancient architecture, of the relief of the ancient architecture, of the archaeological sites and in the treatment of the acquired data; Moreover it articulates its activities according to research lines oriented to the knowledge of the building history of monumental buildings to the diagnosis of structural pathologies, as well as to the identification of degradation phenomena of architectural materials historical.

2) It is equipped with: workstations, laptops, color scanners, printers, digital cameras, two total stations, distance meters, stadiums, poles and everything needed to survey ancient architecture and archaeological sites;

3) It is equipped with digital hygrometers, digital camera.

4) the IT equipment includes workstations equipped with specific software for processing the acquired data through the aforesaid equipment, namely SW photo-straightening; SW recording topographic data; SW framework analysis hygrometrics, SW for surveying and representation;

5) It is equipped with software for surface modeling and the creation of computer models.

The laboratory equipment was used for relevant campaigns related to the archaeological heritage of Puglia, for excavation campaigns in international missions carried out mainly in Mediterranean countries such as Libya and Greece and of recent for the assessment of damage to the architectural heritage of the earthquake of L'Aquila.

Research Activities

The Technical Physics Laboratories are organized into four macro areas of scientific-disciplinary competence:
1. Acoustic area
Certification of the acoustic properties of materials (absorption and soundproofing). Environmental noise measures e
forecast verifications. Acoustic certification of materials on site. Active noise and thermoacoustic control. Holography
acoustics and recognition of acoustic defects in structures. Numerical models of sound propagation. Registration e
sound reproduction with advanced techniques.
2. Area of Energetics
The energy lab is aimed at studying the conversion processes of energy for the reduction of quantity and
the quality of the energy to be used in the processes involved in the thermo-technical systems, in the construction types and
in the use of solar energy. The laboratory is equipped with effective instrumentation for the management of experimental plants of
study and for the analysis of the performance of the building-plant complex.
3. Area of the Quality of the Internal Environment
Characterization of the internal environment from the thermo-hygrometric, visual and acoustic point of view. Analysis of thermal comfort
global and localized in moderate and severe thermal environments. Visual comfort analysis also through software
forward. Characterization and acoustic optimization of places for entertainment and places of worship. Study of the
individual response and consequent optimization of objective parameters.
4. Area of Materials Thermophysics
Thermophysical properties of building materials. Measure in-situ and in the laboratory of the transmittance of the components
building. Hygrometric measurements (moisture content, vapor permeability and moisture buffer value) of materials. Models
number of the building-plant system for the purpose of analyzing energy performance. Performance and Energy Certification
of buildings. Architectural integration of renewable energy systems. Energy and valorisation of renewable sources.

Acoustics, certified measurements of sound absorption, soundproofing properties of materials, environmental noise, indices of acoustic quality of the rooms (including 3D acoustic mapping), sound intensity. Furthermore, it can perform acoustic simulations, using ray-tracing and numerical methods (FEM) and reproduce virtual acoustic fields;

Quality of the Indoor Environment, certified measures of the conditions of thermal-hygrometric well-being, parameters of individual thermal comfort, conditions of visual well-being through measurements of illuminance and luminance, photometric-spectral properties of light sources, of colorimetry.

Materials thermophysics, measures for third parties of the thermophysical properties of materials and components of the building envelope, in the laboratory and in the works.

The supplied equipment allows measurements of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, vapor permeability, water absorption, porosity, specific pores surface, as well as measurements of thermal transmittance.

Research Activities

The Urban Planning Laboratory is a center of excellence in research on methodologies and problems of the governance of the city and of contemporary territories. Moreover, the Dicar Laboratory itself carried out a scientific partnership with the Arca Puglia Centrale (then IACP Bari and Bat) on the occasion of the PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest) of the MIUR "La Città Pubblica" as a Design Laboratory . The production of Guidelines for the sustainable redevelopment of urban outskirts financed in 2005 by MIUR. Research that gave life to two publications; respectively AA.VV. (2009), Public City, Guidelines for urban redevelopment, Mondadori, Milan and that of the Local Research Unit of the Polytechnic of Bari; Martinelli, N. (edited by) (2009), For an Atlas of the Public City of Bari, Adda, Bari the latter with a partial financial contribution to the publication of the same Iacp Bari and Bat. Moreover, the same research group carried out an experience in the field as requested by the MIUR for the research in question collaborating with the Municipality of Bari and with the IACP Bari and Bat conducting the District Laboratory on the occasion of the PIRP of S. Marcello.

Services

It is equipped with technical and scientific skills that have been working for more than 15 years in the construction of knowledge systems on a georeferenced basis deriving from descriptive-interpretative models through highly qualified expertise (planners, landscape architects, researchers and operators in the CAD, GIS, TLR environment , DSS) and for the processing of data acquired from different types of sources (cartographic and alphanumeric).

It is equipped with workstations able to manage spatial data, on a vector and raster basis, large format color scanners, printers and high resolution large format plotters.

It is equipped with software for digital image processing and software for the management of local information systems and relational databases.

Research Activities

The Architectural Design Laboratory is organized into two macro research areas: City Studies and Digital Fabrication.

The Laboratory is a centre of excellence in research on the forms of the contemporary city. Assuming all the main problems related to its "territorial" dimension, such research tries to define new settlement / housing models able to correspond to the aspirations of our time, assigning a correct value to the refound and regenerative strategies (re-use / re-cycle, smart city, green / blue growth ...).

The laboratory is equipped with:

technical and scientific skills, gained over twenty years, having worked in the field of computer-aided architectural design, and setting itself the goal of developing the design process that leads from the idea to the finished piece; therefore, skills have been developed in the field of CAD / CAM and rapid prototyping applied to architecture and industrial design;
workstation with CAD / CAM and BIM software, A0 format colour scanner, A3 colour flatbed scanner, slide scanner, CMSTU11 five-axis CNC machine, ZCorp310 rapid prototyping machine, rapid prototyping machine FDM Stratasys Fortus 360;
software dedicated to solid and superficial modelling for the representation of models of architecture and industrial design;
software dedicated to computer graphics and video editing.

The laboratory equipment has been used to carry out studies in the field of research on the use of stone in contemporary architecture and industrial design products (experimental projects in collaboration with companies in the sector, specialized exhibitions, workshops and internships on construction of complex stone construction elements). Moreover, for inter-university and interdepartmental collaborations. It has also been employed for international experience mainly with Albania, France, Greece, Hungary, Turkey and the Middle Eastern countries in general.
The laboratory supports teaching and research activities in the area of degree laboratories of the degree courses in Architecture and Industrial Design and the Research Doctorate.

Research Activities

The Laboratorio Ufficiale Prove Materiali “M. Salvati” was established according to Law n. 553 of 01.07.1961 and, since 1983, it was named after Prof. Michele Salvati who was its founder.

Beside all the activities supporting the didactics and the experimental research of the Department, the institutional activities consist of tests and monitoring for third party. This activity, recognized for public benefit purpose according to art. n. 20 of Law n. 1086 of 05.11.1971, consists in controlling the materials and the fulfillments the legislation prescribes for the suitable constructions execution, and in monitoring and calibrating testing machines for private laboratories (licensed by Ministry of Public Works).

The Laboratory, one of the biggest and best equipped in the South of Italy for testing building materials and structures, has two large rooms equipped with a bridge crane and a concrete slab of 1 m thick, for tests on materials, structural models and 1:1 scaled structures; in particular, the widest room has about 500mq of floor space and an effective height of 15m, while the smallest room has about 350mq of floor space and an effective height of 9m. Both are served by large driveway gates; another driveway gate let the access to the room beneath the slab. The technical staff employed at the Laboratory is highly specialized in experimentation on materials and structures, with destructive and non destructive, in-situ and in laboratory tests.
