The research includes electric power systems at different scales (from user installations and microgrids, up to distribution grid and transmission networks) for the evaluation of different kinds of grid analysis (in steady-state operation, in fault conditions, in dynamic behaviour) for the development of operation and control methods at different time scales (e.g. long-medium term evolution planning, operation programming, real-time management). Various exchanges with other laboratories and technological demosntrators are in force, to remotely elaborate operation and control strategies and to perform continuous operation analysis of real and experimental installations. The high efficiency operation of power electronic converters is essential to enable their large-scale diffusion both in grid applications and in the electrification of means of transport. Modular converters are a family of power electronics converters increasingly used in high voltage and high power applications for their many advantages, such as the use of low voltage semiconductor technology instead of high voltage modules (less efficient and widespread) and modularity, which is directly associated with scalability, redundancy, fault-tolerant operation and ease of maintenance. Within the MMCC family of modular converters, two architectures are of particular interest to the research group due to their remarkable potential, namely the modular multilevel converter (MMC) and the cascaded H-bridge converter (CHB). The research group is working on advanced modulation and control techniques to improve efficiency, stability and reliability of such converters. </p> <p paraeid="{f9d58b8e-1c8d-4ce3-9aef-770492bc4ae9}{189}" paraid="1592496612"><em><strong>HIGH-FREQUENCY CONVERTERS</strong></em> - In the field of high-speed electric drives, the use of inverters with Wide-Bandgap Devices (SiC MOSFET and GaN HEMT) represents a solution that allows an improvement of the converter efficiency. The introduction of high switching frequency devices with SiC MOSFET or GaN HEMT technology leads to the emergence of several issues, especially related to the considerable stresses imposed on the insulation systems by the sudden voltage variations, reducing the reliability of the system. Research and experimentation activities in LabZERO make use of simulation tools and technologically advanced equipment, in order to reduce the risks of applied research and support product innovation in the path “from concept to market”. The laboratory provides innovative solutions for fast prototyping, for the certification of materials and the development of complex systems, in the fields of energy efficiency, energy conservation, sustainable manufacturing, smart grids and smart cities.</p> <p>LabZERO activities are based on the coordinated work of four research units: three units at the Politecnico di Bari (DEI, DMMM, DICAR), and one at the ENEA Research Center in Brindisi. The Lab is part of the Apulian network for the applied research fostered by “Regione Puglia” and aims to the integration with other R&amp;D networks and industrial clusters. A main strength of the LabZERO is the collaboration with entities of different nature. realized an integrated multidisciplinary laboratory called “Energy Factory Bari” (EFB), to develop research activities, and development of technologies in areas of common interest in the fields of aerospace and energy. The laboratory is located inside the university campus in Bari.</p> <p>Research activities:</p> <p>High speed electrical machines and power converters<br /> Thanks to the recent advances in the field of power electronics, the interest of industry and academia towards high speed electrical machines has increased in the last years also due to the their potential advantages in terms of increased power density and elimination of gear-boxes. Possible applications of such technology can range from aerospace field to the generation of electrical energy from renewable sources, and cogeneration.</p> <p>Control systems<br /> The design stage cannot be considered separate from the development of the electric machine control system to ensure optimum utilization of the entire energy conversion system. In particular, sensorless control strategies (without position and speed sensors) are very interesting to increase system reliability and reduce its complexity. The control algorithms must ensure accurate control performance, compensating for uncertainty and nonlinearity with innovative and effective strategies also in terms of computational cost. In addition, the action performed by the controller will have to present such trends to ensure no additional loss or stress for vibrations and overheatings.</p> <p>Thermo-fluid dynamics of machinery and power systems<br /> The research lines in the field of the thermo-fluid dynamics of machinery and power systems are primarily focused machines and systems in aeronautical applications and the exploitation of energy from flows related to renewable energy sources. In particular, we intend to approach the study of turbomachinery integrated to generators (both traditional and based on the next-generation technology, i.e. annular, polyphase, variable frequency, generator) for the production of electricity both on board of aircraft, which could complement current conventional systems or that can operate in emergency conditions using gas flows present on the aircraft, and in stationary installations on- and off-shore that can harness the of wind, waves and marine energy.</p> <p>Mechanical design and construction of machines<br /> The purpose of the research proposed in the field of mechanical design and mechanical engineering is the study of stress and the response of materials used in innovative systems of turbines integrated with electric generators to ensure reliability levels suitable to the respective applications.
